The Client
The customer manufactures silicone products in a process that generates significant amounts of extremely fine silica dust. Effective dust collection is an important part of maintaining their production environment and keeping the airborne and collected material under control.
The silica dust at this facility presents a particularly demanding environment for dust collection equipment. The fine, white material flows almost like a liquid and readily works its way into equipment and components throughout the collection system. Its extremely dry nature can also contribute to wear and deterioration of seals, gaskets, and other components over time, making routine inspection and preventive maintenance especially important.
The Challenge
The customer’s Donaldson Torit DFE 2-4 dust collector was operating in an environment with a heavy concentration of fine silica dust. Over time, the dust had accumulated throughout the system, heavily loading the filters and regularly filling the collection bin.
The customer was also experiencing issues with portions of the collector’s pulse-cleaning system. Some of the solenoid valves were not firing properly, limiting the system’s ability to consistently pulse the filters and remove accumulated dust. In an application with this volume of fine particulate, maintaining the pulse-cleaning system is an important part of keeping the collector operating as intended.
The condition of seals, gaskets, diaphragms, and other wear components was another maintenance consideration. Because of the extremely dry silica dust present in the process, these components require regular inspection for changes in flexibility and condition.
The Solution
Craig Equipment Company worked alongside the customer’s on-site maintenance team to perform preventive maintenance on the DFE 2-4 collector while demonstrating how the team could inspect and maintain key components in the future.
The service included cleaning and servicing the collector’s diaphragm and solenoid valve assemblies. Solenoid components were cleaned of accumulated material, repair components were installed where needed, and the valves were checked to ensure they were firing correctly during the collector’s pulse-cleaning cycle. The diaphragm valves were also serviced using replacement repair kits. The collector’s existing filters were replaced with new Donaldson DFE Ultra-Web cartridges, with additional attention given to the components responsible for pulsing compressed air through the filters to remove accumulated dust during operation.
Craig Equipment also advised the maintenance team on using differential pressure to monitor filter condition and evaluate the collector’s pulse-cleaning cycle. As dust accumulates on the filters, the pressure difference between the dirty-air and clean-air sides of the collector increases. The system can be configured to begin pulse cleaning when differential pressure reaches a designated high setpoint and continue until it returns to a designated low setpoint. Understanding this relationship gives the maintenance team another tool for monitoring filter loading and confirming that the cleaning system is operating as intended.
Throughout the service visit, Craig Equipment provided hands-on guidance on what to look for during future inspections and how often preventive maintenance should be performed. This included discussing the condition of seals and gaskets, the flexibility or “spring” these components should retain, and signs that cleaning, servicing, or replacement may be necessary.
